Electric scooters cost more to buy but far less to run. Here is the actual maths for India in 2026.
Running cost: petrol vs electric
- A petrol scooter such as the Activa 6G (~50 kmpl) at ₹100/litre petrol costs roughly ₹2 per km.
- An electric scooter such as the Ather 450S charges at about ₹8–10 per unit at home; at roughly 30 Wh/km that is under ₹0.30 per km.
That is a 6–7x difference in energy cost alone.
Worked example: 30 km every day
- Petrol (Activa 6G): ≈ ₹60/day → ≈ ₹21,900/year.
- Electric (Ather 450S): ≈ ₹9/day → ≈ ₹3,300/year.
Yearly saving ≈ ₹18,000 — but remember the EV costs more upfront, so the break-even depends on how much you ride.
When petrol still wins
- If you ride very little, the EV's higher price takes longer to recover.
- If you cannot charge at home overnight, an EV is inconvenient.
When electric wins
- High daily usage (deliveries, long commutes) — payback can be under 18 months.
- Cities with high petrol prices and stable electricity.
